H. Carter Whatley
Donated by Dr. Hugh Carter Whatley (1941-2002), former Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Professor of Political Science and Public Administration, the collection contains approximately one hundred titles dealing with birds, birding, and the environment. Many of the volumes deal with species of birds found in the local area. Of particular merit, the Whatley Collection includes The Birds of North America. This multi-volume series of bird profiles, published by the American Ornithologist’s Union, is an indispensable reference for the study of birds.
A graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and
retired Air Force officer, Carter Whatley served on
the faculty of A&M-Corpus Christi from 1994 until
2000. During that time, Dr. Whatley was active in local
birding. He was also an avid supporter of Special Collections
& Archives, being instrumental in the Library’s acquisition of the Hans and Pat Suter Papers, two of the most renowned environmentalists in Corpus Christi.
Dr. Whatley also proved crucial in the Library’s
acquisition of the papers of the late Kay McCracken,
noted Corpus Christi author and columnist on birds and
birding.
