the Catholic, 1990. Professor Felix Almaraz (l) & Dr. Dalia Garcia (r).

Dr. Clotilde P. García Papers

Longtime Corpus Christi physician, civic leader, genealogist and historian, Dr. Clotilde P. García (1917-2003) was a remarkable and revered person.  Affectionately known as Dr. Cleo, she was widely recognized for delivering health care during an illustrious half-century career in medicine. She was likewise viewed as the first lady of Hispanic genealogy. Dr. Cleo was noted for having led in the founding of the Spanish American Genealogical Association (SAGA) in Corpus Christi.  Through her writing, networking, organizational efforts, sponsorship of conferences and publications, and many other activities, she is credited with having popularized Hispanic genealogy throughout the state and nation. She was the sister of the famed civil rights advocate, Dr. Hector P. Garcia, and the mother of J.A. (Tony) Canales, one of the leading attorneys in Texas and the United States.  She was the recipient of many awards, including the Royal American Order of Isabella the Catholic, given to her by King Juan Carlos of Spain in 1990.  Please see the following Dr. Clotilde P Garcia link for an overview and a selected bibliography on her life.

After retiring from her medical practice and many other activities in 1994, Dr. Cleo donated much of her personal genealogy and history library to A&M-Corpus Christi’s Special Collections & Archives. Part of the department’s non-circulating holdings, the Dr. Clotilde P. Garcia Book Collection contains approximately one thousand items.

Within the 1994 donation, Dr. Cleo also contributed a portion of her personal papers to Special Collections & Archives, thus establishing the Dr. Clotilde P. García Papers.

Dr. Cleo’s materials in Special Collections & Archives were greatly expanded in 2005 by her son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Tony Canales and their children Barbara, Hector, and Patricia who donated approximately one hundred cubic feet of Dr. Cleo’s papers and publications. The bound publications within this latter donation were added to the Dr. Clotilde P. Garcia Book Collection.

The Dr. Clotilde P. García Papers comprise approximately seventy-five (75) linear feet of correspondence, research notes and family trees, clippings and other publications, scrapbooks, maps, organizational records, photographs, certificates, awards, coats of arms, three dimensional objects, and many other sorts of manuscripts, in a total of 151 boxes and numerous shelf items.  Grouped by general subject, these documents contain a wealth of information on most aspects of her life, especially on her work as a lay historian and genealogical researcher. They are a valuable research resource for many audiences including students, academic scholars, as well as community researchers.

The final archival processing of the collection and creation of the inventory was completed by Cecilia G. Venable in 2011.  Other individuals who helped in the initial accessioning, maintenance, and organizing of the papers include Jan Weaver, Grace Charles and Thomas H. Kreneck.
